Respect

We all want our children to be respectful. Even if we’re dealing with someone we don’t really like it helps us to remain civil. The reality is in time your children are probably going to encounter people they don’t like either. So how do you prepare them when they finally confront it? Well, here are a couple of things about respect your kids should know.

Be Polite

This is probably one of the best go to ways to deal with someone with meeting them for the first time. Demonstrate to your children through example how being polite can go a long way. If you’re leaving the store and someone behind you is carrying a lot of stuff open the door for them. Put emphasis on your “please”, “thank you”, and “you’re welcome” even if it isn’t needed at the time. In the real world people do notice when you’re polite to them. Being polite can help them in difficult situations or when they’re first meeting people they don’t know. It gives them some common down to walk on with the other person without coming off as rude.

Give it to Receive It

Respect is not something that can be demanded, taken, or stolen. It has to be earned. This is a hard concept for children to grasp at times. However, show them how by giving respect first they’ll earn it in turn. In order to gain respect though they have to always be polite and aware of how the other person is feeling. The same goes for both children and parents. Respect each other. You’re both two completely different individuals. While, yes, you as the parent deserve respect because you’re the parent be sure to show respect in turn to your child. This lets them know they’re a valued member of the household and that they matter.

Don’t Overreact

We’ve all had those moments where we had to bite the inside of our cheek to keep to keep from saying a few choice words to someone. Teach your children to hold back from overreacting in situations too. If they’re dealing with someone who’s difficult and won’t work with them teach them the proper responses. Walk away. Attempt to compromise or discuss the problem with the person. If the person still refuses to work with them tell your child that is the time when they get the teacher. Knowing how to react to certain situations is key to keeping them from getting frustrated and possibly into trouble.

It’s not easy teaching children about respect. You, as the parent, have to lead the example. If you don’t show respect to others your children won’t either. They copy everything their parents do. Also be sure to praise them when they show respectful behavior. This will encourage them to keep it up. If they decide to be disrespectful firmly correct them. Be firm in what you say and discuss it with them later at the appropriate time.
