How to Raise your Kids as a Single Working Dad

Balancing work and family is a daunting task for most people. Even in two parent households the logistics of parenting and a career can take a toll. In a single parent household, the difficulties increase exponentially. The majority of single parent households consist of a mother as the head of household, but there are a growing number of single dads who are raising their kids alone. How to raise your kids as a single working dad is a question many of these fathers ask themselves every day. Try these tips on how to raise your kids as a single working dad.

Assess Your Resources

Sitting down to assess your resources can be scary, but you need to know what you are working with. This includes not only finances but also resources in your family or community that can help you be the best parent you can be. If the other parent is involved, have a clear picture of when visitation occurs and what help the other parent can be. Keep tabs on available help from grandparents and other relatives for emergencies such as illness or when you have to work late. Know the guidelines of daycare and afterschool care in case you need to use those resources. Also research what type of playgroups, activities and support groups are available for single parent households in your community. Sometimes just connecting with others who have similar struggles can help you cope with the stress of being a single dad.

Be Honest with Your Employer

Men often have the mind set of being successful at work no matter what the cost, and while that may be acceptable if you have a two parent household, it cannot be the focus for a single dad. Be honest with your employer about being a single parent. You may have to use those sick days occasionally. You may need to leave for a parent teacher conference or doctor’s appointments sometimes. Having a good relationship with work and an understanding of your situation will aid you in being the best parent you can be.

Keep a Planner

With work and children, you need a way to keep up with all activities, meetings, practices, appointments, and work related items. Keep a planner where you can keep everything organized. There are many good electronic planners you can download to your smartphone or tablet that will even remind you of important appointments and events. Immediately record any new items that come up. You will lose all those little appointment cards quickly. Another tip is to sign up for electronic alerts. From doctors to pharmacies, there are alert programs that can send you an email, text, or voicemail reminding you to pick up medications or when appointments are scheduled.

Following these tips on how to raise your kids as a single working dad will help you prioritize and stay focused on what is important…your kids!
